"Chocolate Day: Rebuild the Bond"
Hameed was very excited to know his
grandpa's date of birth. He was even more thrilled because that special day
falls in the same week—and to top it off, it's also celebrated as Chocolate Day
around the world!
Yes, it was on 7th July. Hameed was
in second standard and only 8 years old. Before he started school, he used to
spend most of his time with his grandpa. But after joining school, he had very
little time with him. The truth was, he slowly drifted away from his grandpa’s
company. Most of his time after school was spent with friends and playing
games.
Somewhere along the way, he had
forgotten his grandpa. Now, he no longer missed his grandpa’s company. Although
his grandpa often called him and tried to attract him by showing chocolates,
Hameed didn’t feel drawn anymore. Slowly, his grandpa became just a memory of
the past. With age, grandpa’s health began to decline. He often remained
unwell.
Grandpa spent most of his time alone in
his room. Often, the sound of his coughing reached Hameed’s ears, but he
remained busy in his own interests.
This was often discussed in the
house—that when Hameed was born, no one was happier than his grandpa. He
celebrated the occasion by distributing sweets in the neighbourhood. After his
mother, it was his grandpa whom he was closest to.
Hameed learned to walk by holding
his grandpa’s finger. Whenever grandpa entered the house, his eyes would first
search for Hameed. He often brought toys for him and loved playing with him.
Most of grandpa’s time at home was spent with Hameed. He played every game with
him and often carried Hameed on his shoulders, walking around the street in
front of their house. Hameed used to enjoy that ride on his grandpa’s shoulders
the most.
Grandpa always brought a chocolate for
Hameed and enjoyed it with him. Whenever Hameed spoke in his broken words,
grandpa would be filled with joy.
When Hameed was five years old, grandpa
took him to the market where he bought Hameed’s favorite toys and chocolates.
He often introduced Hameed to his friends there, and they were always happy to
meet him.
One day, grandpa bought a small bicycle
for Hameed. Hameed was overjoyed to see it and hugged his grandpa tightly. But
then he said, “But I don’t know how to ride it.” Grandpa smiled and replied,
“Don’t worry, my son. I will teach you.”
For the next two days, Grandpa trained Hameed
to ride the bicycle.
He held the seat and gave him instructions: “Push the pedals, keep your
balance.”
Grandpa ran alongside the cycle, helping Hameed.
Sometimes, Hameed fell and cried due to the pain, but Grandpa quickly came to
help.
He gave him water, gently bandaged his wounds, and patted his back saying, “Well done! You’re learning fast!”
Grandpa’s kind and caring nature gave Hameed confidence. Hameed felt encouraged
and was ready to try again and again.
Grandpa stayed by his side the whole time.
Thanks to Hameed’s hard work and Grandpa’s dedication, Hameed learned to ride
the bicycle quickly.

After Hameed gained full control over the
bicycle, Grandpa was very happy.
He proudly told everyone at home about Hameed’s achievement again and again.
To celebrate, he gave Hameed a surprise gift — a chocolate.
Hameed was overjoyed, and Grandpa’s love and encouragement made the moment even
more special.
Hameed remembered the days when he used to
spend all his time around Grandpa.
Grandpa’s world mostly revolved around him.
But after Hameed started school, he got busy with the new environment, and the
distance between him and Grandpa slowly began to grow.
Last night, during a conversation with his aunt, she casually mentioned, “Hameed, your Grandpa's birthday is coming up
this week — on the 5th of July. What will you gift him?”
Hameed didn’t have an answer at that moment.
But Hameed made a plan for that special day.
He was determined to rebuild the bond with his Grandpa — just like it used to be.
He decided that from now on, he would spend time with his Grandpa every day.
Today, as Hameed got ready to go to
school, his inner voice urged him to visit Grandpa, give him a greeting, and
say, “Get well soon.”
But he held himself back — he wanted to surprise Grandpa.
At school, Hameed kept thinking about what gift
he could give besides chocolate.
He was lost in this thought the whole day.
Finally, he decided that on Chocolate Day, he
would gift Grandpa both chocolates and a book of poems.
He had often seen Grandpa reciting poems, so he knew it would make him happy.
Hameed returned home with joy in his heart.
Finally, the day arrived — the day
Hameed had been eagerly waiting for.
Hameed entered Grandpa's room.
Grandpa was resting on the bed.
As soon as he saw Hameed, a warm smile appeared on his face.
"Come in, my prince," he said softly.
Hameed noticed that Grandpa looked a bit
weak, so he walked slowly toward him with a gentle smile.
"Grandpa, I want to give you a surprise," he said.
"A surprise?" Grandpa's eyes sparkled with curiosity and joy.
Hameed said,
“Today is Chocolate Day… and Grandpa, it’s also
your birthday!”
Grandpa replied in surprise, “Oh, I forgot! How did you
remember it when no one at home even mentioned it to me?”
"Actually, I got this
information from Aunty,"
Hameed replied.
"During a conversation with her last week, she told me about your
birthday."
"Oh!" Grandpa smiled warmly.
"Grandpa, I brought a hadiya for
you on this special occasion," Hameed said with a smile.
Grandpa smiled warmly as he looked at Hameed.
Hameed took out a chocolate and a book from his bag and handed them to Grandpa.
Grandpa accepted the gift warmly and
looked at the book.
"This is my favorite book!" he said with joy.
"But this chocolate... I want to enjoy it with you."
Grandpa unwrapped the chocolate, broke off
a piece, and gave it to Hameed with a loving smile.
"How’s school going?"
Grandpa asked.
"Good! I go to school regularly and
complete all my work on time," Hameed replied.
"Very good!" Grandpa
said proudly.
"So that’s why you’ve been so busy
lately," he added with a gentle smile.
"Grandpa, get well soon! I miss your
company. I want to play with you,"
Hameed said lovingly.
"Why not, my prince? I’m
always ready," Grandpa replied with a smile.
"Just watch, I’ll get up soon and play
with you!" he added cheerfully.
"Promise?" Hameed asked innocently.
"Yes, my child," Grandpa
replied with a smile.
"Okay, now you
take rest, Grandpa. I’ll come again in the morning," Hameed said
gently.
Hameed left the room, and Grandpa watched him
go with a smile.
Then, Grandpa opened the book Hameed had gifted him and began reading it,
enjoying it happily.
