The Trick


Whenever a number ends in 5 and you want to divide it by 5, follow these steps:


Ignore the digit 5 in the units place.

Take the remaining number.

Multiply it by 2.

Add 1 to the result.

The final answer is your quotient.

Example 1

125 ÷ 5


Step 1: Ignore the last digit 5.


Remaining number = 12


Step 2: Multiply 12 by 2.


12 × 2 = 24


Step 3: Add 1 to the result.


24 + 1 = 25


Therefore,


125 ÷ 5 = 25


Why Does This Work?

The number 125 can be written as:


125 = (12 × 10) + 5


Now divide by 5:


125 ÷ 5 = (12 × 10 ÷ 5) + (5 ÷ 5)


= (12 × 2) + 1


= 24 + 1


= 25


That is exactly the same process used in the shortcut.

Ignore 5 → 78


78 × 2 = 156


156 + 1 = 157


Answer: 785 ÷ 5 = 157
